Founder Gift from Walgreens Take Care Health Systems Furthers Nurse Practitioner Education
8.17.12
The American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Foundation (AANPF) announces the recent “founder’s gift” of $100,000 from Take Care Health Systems, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Walgreens (NYSE, NASDAQ: WAG) and the nation’s largest and most comprehensive manager of convenient care clinics and worksite health and wellness centers.
This donation will help provide ongoing nurse practitioner (NP) education by supporting the Foundation’s Scholarship and Grant Fund, and is especially timely given the looming shortage of health care providers and increased demand for medical care facing the U.S. As leaders in primary and acute care, the 140,000 NPs in the U.S. play a vital role in the health care system and are a key component of the solution for increasing the public’s access to high-quality, affordable care post-reform.
“Since its inception, Take Care has been committed to advancing the visibility and role of nurse practitioners, serving as a strong advocate for the profession and an employer of choice,” said Sandra Ryan, RN, MSN, CPNP, FAANP and chief nurse practitioner officer for Take Care Health Systems. “We are longtime supporters of the AANP and the Foundation. Our shared vision and collaborative efforts have benefitted nurse practitioners nationwide, and more importantly, the patients we serve. We’re proud to be the organization’s lead benefactor.”
The growing national shortage of primary care providers, in addition to the increasing number of aging baby boomers, is placing a high demand on medical care. “Support for this fund helps make quality health care delivery a possibility for millions of Americans,” said Kay Todd, AANP executive director.
Take Care Clinics are walk-in, professional health care centers located at more than 350 select Walgreens drugstores across the country. Board-certified family nurse practitioners and physician assistants treat patients 18 months and older for common illnesses, offer preventive services such as immunizations and physicals and are licensed to write prescriptions, when necessary, that can be filled at the patient’s pharmacy of choice. Established in 1998 as a nonprofit 501(c)(3), the AANPF was the first national foundation providing scholarships and grants for NP’s. This continued service and the $2 million campaign goal is particularly critical in today’s world. The enactment of the Affordable Care Act followed by release of the Institute of Medicine’s report on the Future of Nursing, underscore NP’s unique contributions and capacity to transform the quality and availability of care.
